Why Converse?

A simple design, but immediately recognised. Converse have been producing shoes since 1908, and it’s fair to say they’ve been on to a winning formula since then. But given their humble origins in Boston (USA) where did all the success come from?

The tipping point first came in 1917, when the All-Star canvas shoes were produced. The reason behind that famous star icon on the ankle? To act as padding should you be playing a particularly vigorous game of basketball! Their nickname, “Chuck Taylors” came from the basketball player who promoted them in America. By 1949, they had taken on the design we know and love today.

Soon enough, the sport shoes began to take on other meanings. By the 1950s, the Jack Purcell Converse were being flaunted as the must have fashion item for iconic stars like James Dean. By the 1960s, George Harrison had a pair in one of The Beatles’ last photoshoots.

Gradually, they transitioned through the world of rock: through the Ramones, to Guns N’ Roses to Nirvana. Shoes that once belonged on the basketball court had shot straight into popular culture.

But what about now? Here’s some suggestions for which Cons could suit you best:-

Less laces

The All Star Ox are designed even more for the casual wearer. Perfect for when you’re constantly flitting between staying in and going out.

Longer legs

The All Star XX-Hi are for those in the entirely opposite camp. Definitely for those thinking of getting in touch with their inner punk!

An artistic statement

The great thing about canvas shoes is that they are literally a canvas for you to paint your ideas onto. Recent designs have celebrated pop culture artists like Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein. Why not go even further into the pop culture theme with some designs from Breaking Bad or The Walking Dead?

Plain and simple

It’s a tried and tested formula, but what about an ordinary pair of All Stars? Besides, black goes well with anything.
